What is LBMA?

LBMA stands for London Bullion Market Association and is the global standard for trading physical gold and silver worldwide.

The organisation establishes the requirements that determine what qualifies as high-quality precious metals, known as Good Delivery.

These standards include criteria for purity, weight, origin, and handling.

LBMA is also responsible for the international benchmark prices used daily by banks, institutions, and market participants around the world.

Where are the precious metals stored?

The precious metals are held in custody by J.P. Morgan Chase Bank N.A., London, one of the world's leading custodians of precious metals.

The metals are stored in high-security vaults and in accordance with LBMA standards, ensuring strict controls over quality, handling, and reporting.

As a global institution, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank N.A., London provides the infrastructure used by central banks and some of the world's largest asset managers.

Where Is All the Gold Today?

According to estimates from Metals Focus and the World Gold Council, the global above-ground gold stock amounts to approximately 220,000 tonnes. Nearly all the gold ever mined remains in circulation, as gold is rarely consumed and is instead recycled and reused.

The largest share is held in jewellery (44%), which effectively acts as a passive stock that can re-enter the market when needed. Investment gold (bars and coins) tends to be more price-sensitive and often drives flows, while central bank reserves are strategic holdings that move slowly but can have a significant impact on market sentiment.

New production of gold adds only around 1–2% annually to the global gold stock, meaning that gold prices are primarily driven by demand and the reallocation of existing gold rather than newly mined supply.
